Dave Roche has been practicing landscape architecture for 25 years, first as an associate with William Pressley and Associates in Boston, Amphion Environmental, Inc. in Oakland, and Garden Makers in Sacramento, then for 10 years as a project landscape architect with Jack Chandler & Associates in the Napa Valley. Dave has designed and managed residential, estate, multi-unit, hospitality, and resort projects throughout California, and in Texas, Utah and Minnesota. Dave personally manages the conceptual design, design development, construction documentation, and construction observation on ROCHE+ROCHE projects.

A fifth-generation Californian, Dave received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of California, Davis, with additional coursework through the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. He is a Registered Landscape Architect in the State of California, a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and a Certified Irrigation Auditor.

Nancy Roche has over 25 years of horticultural and design experience as manager and buyer for Sloat Garden Centers, landscape designer for Raikes Landscape, and purchasing manager for Suzman-Cole Design Associates, as well as many residential design projects under her own name. Nancy's broad knowledge of and love for plant material provide the foundation for her ROCHE+ROCHE landscape designs and garden renovation consultations.

Nancy is an Illinois native who relocated to California in the 1980's. She received her Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with additional coursework in landscape architecture through the University of California, Berkeley Extension. Nancy has since taught planting design through the University of California, Berkeley Extension, and takes advantage of ongoing education courses throughout northern California to feed her ongoing interest in new introductions to the industry, California natives, and best landscape management practices. In 2010, Nancy added the Bay-Friendly Landscape certification for sustainable landscape practices to her resume.

ROCHE+ROCHE Landscape Architecture was formed in 2005, when Nancy and Dave both left their former employers and decided to make their ongoing design collaborations the focus of their professional lives. Roche+Roche projects are typically located in northern California, with an emphasis in Sonoma and Napa Counties, the Bay Area and the Peninsula, but include the right projects throughout the United States and abroad. The work mix typically includes residential estate, winery, hospitality and resort projects, with occasional multi-unit housing and commercial projects.

Areas of interest and expertise include:

  • Innovative use of common materials, reclaimed/recycled , native, and natural materials.
  • Superior understanding of and execution of site layout, grading, and construction detailing.
  • Sourcing and procurement of highest quality plant material, specimen material, and new introductions.
  • 'Quiet' plant combinations that support the architecture and delight the senses throughout the year.
  • Native plantings, native meadows, wildlands interface, organic and biodynamic gardens.

We view each project as the unique intersection of client/user, program, site, and architectural style, so no two projects are the same. We are experienced in working in many landscape styles, and around many architectural styles, though our design approach tends to lean toward clean, simple, often geometric lines in the built or 'hardscape', with the planted landscape providing a softer, more organic counterpoint.

Our goal is to establish our reputation through positive referals and recognition by our peers and the press, based on excellence in design, documentation and service.
