Trilogy

Napa Valley, Calfornia

Set on a mostly level, land-locked parcel surrounded by neighbors’ vineyards and open space, this 3.75-acre prime parcel enjoys valley and mountain views in three directions.  Signum Architecture organized the architecture into three zones (public great room, private bedroom wings, and an entertaining barn/pool house) on two diverging axes and with distinct materiality, creating the feeling that the barn and pool perhaps predated the home.  We worked with Signum to massage the outdoor living spaces, using gentle changes in elevation and planted intrusions into the hardscape to create and reinforce varied outdoor rooms within the larger landscape.  Thoughtful use of materials and finishes bring the language of the architecture into the landscape.  The strong cross-axis of the Syar stone wall is echoed in the landscape wall at the arrival auto court.  The smooth concrete seat walls echo the exposed foundations, and help define the transition from private outdoor space to shared landscape.  The same Portuguese limestone used inside the great room flows out into the pool terrace and outdoor dining area, and forms the pool coping, and wall cap at the fire pit area.  Roche+Roche worked with local steel fabricator Steel Geisha to create a custom steel screen art piece that gently directs visitors to the front door, while briefly focusing their view on a companion focal piece deeper in the garden.

Both passive and active outdoor use spaces were created to support the indoor-outdoor lifestyle the clients desired.  A covered terrace with outdoor fireplace greets visitors as they arrive.  Outdoor dining under a pergola is set adjacent to a cleverly designed pivoting bar service window.  A sunken outdoor living room with a custom limestone fire pit utilizes seat walls as well as custom furnishings by Shawback Design.   A bocce court with seating areas at each end is tucked alongside the Barn. And near the dark, reflective pool with two infinity edges and interior spa, a permanent concrete ping-pong table for year-round play.
